YouTube remains a leading video-sharing platform online. The app is owned by Google and has a dedicated Android app, allowing users to access a deep pool of video content, from music videos, tutorials, to movies and vlogs. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the YouTube app to gauge its performance and user experience.

Key Features

  • Video Playback – as a video-sharing platform, YouTube has a robust video player that supports different resolutions, including 1080p, 1440p, and even 4K. It also has autoplay, captions, and playback speed adjustments for enhanced viewing experience.
  • Recommendations  – YouTube’s “Home” tab showcases personalized video recommendations that are based on your viewing history and interactions. It also shows trending videos, categories, and curated content based on popular and niche interests.
  • Subscriptions – this allows users to follow different channels and keep up with their latest uploads. This section provides an organized feed of content from channels you are subscribed to.
  • Library and Watch History – the library tab stores users’ watch history, saved playlists, and uploaded videos.
  • YouTube Premium – YouTube has a premium subscription service, which provides an ad-free experience, background play, and access to YouTube Music.

User Interface and Design

YouTube features a modern interface that prioritizes ease of navigation and content accessibility. The app’s main screen presents a personalized feed of video recommendations that is based on your preference and latest viewing history.

The app also features a bottom navigation bar, giving users access to Home, Explore, Subscriptions, Notifications, and Library. I really liked the bottom navigation bar since it has intuitive icons and clear labels.

The user interface also supports dark mode for a more comfortable viewing experience in low-light conditions and reduces battery usage on OLED screens.

YouTube’s video player is minimalist, with controls that appear when you tap on the screen and automatically hide after a few seconds.

Performance

On my Redmi K70 and Samsung A53, YouTube performed smoothly with quick video loading times and responsive touch controls. Video streaming has minimal buffering even on higher resolutions and using mobile data.

The app consumes minimal system resources and going in and out of the app is flawless. However, users with older or lower spec devices may encounter stutters and crashes when playing videos at higher resolutions.

One complaint I have is that the app isn’t that optimized for my Redmi K70’s 120Hz display. When coming from another app, I immediately notice that my screen is locked at 60Hz, which makes the UI feel laggy when browsing the feed or subscriptions page.

YouTube Premium

YouTube has a premium subscription service that offers an enhanced viewing experience. The service is priced as per the region and has several benefits compared to the regular version.

The most significant feature is the ad-free experience across all videos. This eliminates interruptions and allows users to jump straight to the content they want to watch. YouTube Premium also includes background play, which allows users to continue listening to videos while using other apps or when their screen is off.

Subscribers also gain access to YouTube Music, which has an extensive library of songs and playlists, offline listening, and ad-free streaming.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Youtube for Android delivers a robust and enjoyable video viewing experience. Its user-friendly interface, extensive feature set, and smooth performance make it a go-to platform for consuming and creating videos. Whether you’re catching up on the news, enjoying music, or following your favorite creators, YouTube offers a wide range of tools to enhance your experience.
